Choosing the Right Engine Oil for Your German Car

Using the wrong specification oil is one of the most common and costly mistakes we see in the workshop.
Specification beats viscosity
Mercedes-Benz publishes MB-Approval numbers such as 229.5, 229.51 and 229.52, and BMW, Audi and Volkswagen have their own equivalents. Matching the viscosity on the bottle, 5W-30 for example, is not enough. The approval number confirms the additive package, ash content and shear stability suit your engine, its emissions equipment and its service interval.
Diesel particulate filters and low-SAPS oil
Diesel models fitted with a particulate filter need a low-SAPS oil, meaning reduced sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur. Standard oil leaves ash deposits that the filter cannot burn off during regeneration. The filter blocks progressively, the car starts forcing regeneration cycles, and eventually the filter needs cleaning or replacing, which costs far more than the correct oil ever would.
Why the wrong oil damages chain-driven engines
Several German engines drive the camshafts by chain, and the chain tensioner is hydraulic, relying on oil pressure and oil quality. Thin, degraded or incorrect oil means the tensioner does not hold the chain properly, especially on cold start. That is the rattle owners describe in the first seconds after starting, and it is a warning worth acting on.
Topping up correctly
Never mix specifications when topping up, and never fill above the maximum mark. Overfilling lets the crankshaft whip the oil into foam, and foam does not carry pressure to the bearings. Check the level on level ground with the engine at the temperature your handbook specifies, or use the electronic oil level readout if your car has one instead of a dipstick.
If you are unsure
Phone the workshop with your VIN and we will confirm exactly which specification your engine requires and how much it takes. It costs nothing and takes a minute.

Questions About This Topic
It is generally required on modern German engines, but the approval number is what matters. A fully synthetic oil without the correct approval is still the wrong oil for your engine.
Monthly is sensible, and always before a long trip. Engines with higher mileage can use oil normally, and catching a low level early avoids serious damage.
