Transmission & Gearbox Repairs in Polokwane
Transmission & Gearbox Repairs at Our Polokwane Workshop
An automatic gearbox that slips, thumps between gears or hesitates when pulling away is rarely beyond saving, but it does need someone who understands the specific unit. We service, diagnose and repair automatic and manual transmissions on Mercedes-Benz and other German vehicles in Polokwane.
Symptoms We See
- Harsh or delayed shifts, particularly when the gearbox is cold
- Slipping under acceleration, where engine revs climb but the car does not pull
- A thump or shunt when selecting Drive or Reverse
- The gearbox locking into limp mode or one gear only
- A transmission or check engine warning light
- Red or brown fluid on the driveway under the centre of the car
What the Work Involves
- Automatic transmission oil and filter service to manufacturer specification
- Conductor plate, valve body and solenoid repair
- Torque converter diagnosis and replacement
- Transmission adaptation reset after service
- Manual gearbox repair, bearing and synchro work
- Gearbox removal, refitting and mount replacement
How We Diagnose It
We start with a full-system scan to read gearbox fault codes and look at live data such as oil temperature, slip values and solenoid currents. Then we road test with the scan tool connected so we can see what the transmission is doing at the exact moment the fault appears. Only once that is established do we open anything up, because a large proportion of automatic gearbox complaints turn out to be a conductor plate, speed sensor or wiring fault rather than internal mechanical damage.
Mercedes-Benz Applications
Mercedes-Benz 5G-Tronic (722.6) and 7G-Tronic (722.9) gearboxes have well-known weak points: the 13-pin connector sleeve leaking oil into the loom, conductor plate speed-sensor failures and torque converter lock-up shudder. They also need the correct MB-approved fluid and a transmission adaptation reset after servicing, otherwise shift quality stays poor even with fresh oil. We do both as standard.
This work is also carried out on BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche vehicles. If your car is a Mercedes-Benz, the Mercedes-Benz Specialists page explains our model-specific capability in more detail.

Transmission Repairs — Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Despite the 'sealed for life' label on some units, we consistently see longer gearbox life where the oil and filter are replaced roughly every 60 000 to 80 000 km. Heat is what kills automatics, and old oil runs hotter.
Very often torque converter lock-up shudder, which can sometimes be resolved with the correct fluid service if it is caught early. We diagnose it on live data before recommending converter replacement.
We carry out diagnosis, servicing, valve body, conductor plate and mechatronic repairs, and gearbox removal and refitting. Where a full internal rebuild is the right answer we manage that process for you and refit and reprogram the unit ourselves.
Usually a full day, because the oil level has to be set at a specified fluid temperature and the adaptations reset and relearned on a road test.
