Clutch Repairs & Replacement in Polokwane

Clutch Repairs & Replacement being carried out at Barat German Auto in Polokwane

Clutch Repairs & Replacement at Our Polokwane Workshop

A clutch gives plenty of warning before it fails completely. Catching it early means a straightforward replacement instead of being recovered from the side of the R71 with a flywheel that also needs renewing. We fit complete clutch kits to German vehicles at our Industrial, Polokwane workshop.

Symptoms We See

  • Engine revs rising without matching acceleration, especially in higher gears or on a hill
  • A biting point that has crept up close to the top of the pedal travel
  • Juddering or shuddering as you pull away
  • A heavy pedal, or one that stays on the floor
  • Rattling at idle that disappears when the clutch pedal is pressed, often a dual-mass flywheel
  • Difficulty selecting first or reverse from standstill

What the Work Involves

  • Complete clutch kit replacement: friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing
  • Dual-mass flywheel inspection, measurement and renewal
  • Concentric slave cylinder and master cylinder replacement
  • Clutch hydraulic system bleed and leak repair
  • Rear main seal and gearbox input shaft seal replacement while access is open
  • Gearbox mount and driveshaft inspection

How We Diagnose It

Before quoting we confirm the clutch is actually the fault, because slipping can also come from a contaminated friction plate caused by a leaking rear main seal, or from a hydraulic fault where the clutch never fully releases. Once the gearbox is out we measure the flywheel for wear and free play and show you the readings. Replacing seals and the release bearing while the gearbox is already out costs very little extra and avoids a second labour bill later.

Mercedes-Benz Applications

On Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Vito and manual C-Class models the dual-mass flywheel is frequently worn by the time the clutch is finished. We check the flywheel's rotational free play against the tolerance rather than automatically selling you one, and we tell you which option you are being quoted on.

This work is also carried out on BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche vehicles. If your car is a Mercedes-Benz, the Mercedes-Benz Specialists page explains our model-specific capability in more detail.

Clutch Replacement — Frequently Asked Questions

Anywhere from 80 000 km to well over 200 000 km. Driving style matters more than mileage: riding the clutch, holding the car on a hill with the clutch instead of the brake, and towing all shorten its life considerably.

Not always. A dual-mass flywheel is only replaced when its free play or run-out is outside tolerance, or if it is heat damaged. We measure it while the gearbox is out and give you the numbers.

Yes. A badly slipping clutch overheats and can heat-crack the flywheel and damage the pressure plate, turning a clutch job into a clutch and flywheel job. It also risks leaving you stranded.

Most vehicles are a one to two day job depending on whether the subframe has to come down and whether the flywheel is being replaced.
