Common Mercedes-Benz AIRMATIC Problems and Warning Signs — Barat German Auto, Polokwane

Air suspension faults follow a predictable pattern. Knowing that pattern keeps the repair bill sensible.

The car sits low overnight

This is the most common AIRMATIC complaint and almost always means the system is losing air while parked. The usual culprits are a perished air spring, a leaking valve block seal or a damaged air line. While the engine runs the compressor keeps up with the leak, so the car looks fine when you drive it and sags again the moment it stands.

The compressor is usually a victim, not the cause

A compressor is designed to run in short bursts. When a leak makes it run continuously it overheats and wears out. That is why replacing a burnt-out compressor without finding the leak leads to a second failed compressor a few months later. We pressure test and soap test the entire system first and quote the leak repair and the compressor together, so you know the whole picture.

Warning messages and ride-height faults

Messages such as 'Vehicle too low' or a car that refuses to raise or lower can also come from a level sensor that has failed or lost its calibration, or from a linkage that has been disturbed during other suspension work. These are diagnosed on live data by comparing what each sensor reports against the actual measured ride height.

A harsh ride with no warning light

AIRMATIC struts damp as well as support. A strut that has lost its damping ability makes the car feel crashy even while ride height stays correct. This is diagnosed physically, on the lift and on a road test.

Repair or convert to coil springs?

Conversion kits exist, and for a very old vehicle with multiple failed components the arithmetic sometimes favours them. But conversion changes how the car rides, can leave permanent warning messages active, and removes the self-levelling function that makes these cars comfortable when loaded. Our default recommendation is to repair the system properly, and we will explain the honest comparison for your specific model rather than pushing one option.

Questions About This Topic

It appears across S-Class, E-Class, CLS, ML, GLE, GL, GLS and certain G-Class variants, and some Vito and Sprinter models use rear air assistance. We work on all of them.

Not for long. A collapsed corner damages the bump stops and the strut itself, and continued compressor operation kills the compressor. Get it looked at quickly.
