Mercedes-Benz Service A vs Service B Explained

Mercedes-Benz Service A vs Service B Explained — Barat German Auto, Polokwane

What Service A and Service B actually cover, how ASSYST calculates the due date, and why local conditions matter.

What Service A includes

Service A is the lighter of the two alternating services. It covers an engine oil and filter change using an oil meeting the correct MB-Approval specification, a check and top-up of all fluid levels, a tyre inflation and condition check, a brake component inspection and a reset of the maintenance counter. It is a maintenance service, not a repair inspection, and it assumes the car has been looked after between visits.

What Service B adds

Service B is carried out at the alternate interval and includes everything in Service A plus a cabin dust and combination filter replacement, brake fluid replacement and a more detailed inspection of the drivetrain, suspension, exhaust and underbody. Depending on model and age, spark plugs, air filter and transmission service may fall due around the same time, which is why it is worth asking what is actually due on your specific car rather than assuming.

How ASSYST works out the interval

The ASSYST and ASSYST PLUS systems do not simply count kilometres. They monitor engine operating hours, oil temperature, cold starts, trip length and driving style, then calculate how much useful life the oil has left. Short trips across town, heavy loads, high ambient temperatures and dusty conditions all shorten the interval, which is why two identical cars can show very different service due dates.

What we recommend for Polokwane conditions

We suggest not stretching the oil change to the maximum the counter will allow, particularly on turbocharged engines and on cars that do a lot of short journeys around Polokwane. An oil and filter change every 10 000 to 12 000 km is inexpensive compared with what timing chain wear or turbocharger bearing failure costs, and clean oil is the cheapest protection available for these engines.

Dust also matters here. Air filters and cabin filters clog faster in Limpopo than the standard interval assumes, and a restricted air filter costs you fuel economy long before it triggers a warning light.

Does independent servicing affect my warranty?

No. In South Africa you may have your vehicle serviced at an independent workshop using approved parts and correct procedures without losing your factory warranty. What matters is that the work is documented, the correct specification parts and fluids are used and the service is recorded. We keep a full record of what was done to your car and reset the ASSYST counter as part of the service.

Questions About This Topic

The dashboard message tells you, and the ASSYST counter alternates. If you are not sure, phone us with your registration and we will read it off the vehicle when you arrive.

The oil keeps degrading past the point where it protects the engine. On chain-driven Mercedes-Benz engines this is one of the most common causes of premature timing chain and tensioner wear.
